Remote learning collaboration on sustainable development themes





Since last spring we have worked remotely with our American friends from Ocracoke. When we first started working with our partner school, we divided ourselves into a few different groups. All kinds of sustainable habits are becoming more and more important to us so it was only natural to cover this subject from multiple perspectives.

Each group had the chance to choose a topic related to our three main Agenda 2030 themes, which are "responsible consumption", "life below water" and "good health and wellbeing". Every group has Finnish and American students so that we can really ponder these themes from different points of view, and compare how American and Finnish youth thinks about sustainability.

Sustainable development is a big theme in our studies in Finland in almost every subject. That's why we were very interested in learning how the American students view these things. Our own thoughts about the subjects is one of the things we have discussed while meeting through Teams, Zoom or other virtual platforms with our own groups. Many of the groups have also sent messages to each other, and made plans how to execute our projects.

Working remotely has given us the opportunity to get to know each other better and at the same time it has taught how to utilize virtual platforms, even though most of us were familiar with Zoom/ Microsoft Teams because of the pandemic. 

Here is a short introduction to each group :

Group 1
Hello! We are Laulu and Meeri and our theme is sustainable consumption. We are lucky to have three American students called Christian, Rahnier and Nicholas in our group to discuss our thoughts about the consumption habits of young people. We are especially focused on how the habits differ between Finland and the Usa. Our idea is to study the differences in attitudes and behaviors through a survey that was filled by highschool students from both countries.

Group 2
Greetings from Aida and Hilla! In our group there are also two American students, Melanie and Kit. We are planning to make an informative video about the effects of fishing.
 
Group 3
Hello! We are Senni and Siiri. We have three American studens in our group also. Our theme is life below water. Our goal is to find and discuss differences concerning our waterways.

Group 4
Hi! We are Eini and Emilia. There are also three American studens in our group, Elsie, Mariah and Caroline. Our theme is sustainabe infrastructure. Our goal is to compare differences in our countries' infrastructure.

Ready for the excursion

  At the moment, our team is ready for the excursion: after a stop in Dallas, Texas, we'll spend a week on a small Ocracoke island meeting our American study friends and visiting their school. Ocracoke island is situated in North Carolina. After the flight from Dallas to Norfolk there will be a panoramic drive through the North Carolina Outer Banks capes and islands heading towards the Ocracoke Island.
