Welcome to follow our project "Two Continents - The Shared Environment"
The Transatlantic Classroom project is about to begin!
Well not really - we’ve been working on this since January, when we went to the US Embassy in Finland to present our themes and ideas concerning the projects. All Finnish schools involved delivered a small speech about their unique project and the associated school of choice located somewhere in the USA.
The themes were all very interesting and there was a lot of variation as well. All those schools have received the Transatlantic Classroom funding from the Finnish National Agency for Education and The U.S. Embassy in Finland. The funding is for a collaboration project with an American school. The project work is guided to be engaged with Agenda 2030 themes. Thus, the project themes are all somehow related to sustainable development.
Our school Kauriala Upper Secondary School project team decided to pick goals from the Agenda 2030 program based on students’ interests and to focus on them with smaller groups made with the Finnish and American students. The themes we’re going to be concentrating on are: 1) responsible consumption 2) life below water 3) good health and wellbeing.
The American high school we’re working with is Ocracoke school, that is on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. We’ll be traveling there in September – October 2023 for 11 days. Ocracoke Island is affected by many things us Finns can’t even comprehend, such as the rising sea-levels and natural phenomena. Working with each other will certainly be a life-changing and informative experience for both parties.
The student groups have been working closely together via video calls and messages since April. The methods used and the final outcomes vary from group to group, which makes the project versatile and interesting. The common idea was to compare the Finnish and American point-of-views considering a topic. Now it’s time to polish our projects and finally meet the students and teachers in real life on Ocracoke Island!
